University’s Cook Stops Estancia

Brant Cook fell short of a no-hitter, but completed a shutout as University defeated Estancia, 14-0, in a Pacific Coast League baseball game Friday at Estancia.

Cook had a perfect game through five innings, but a sixth inning error ended that bid. Cook took a no-hitter into the seventh, but gave up a hit with one out. Cook had six strikeouts for University (7-5, 3-2 in league).

Matt McNeill had four runs batted in for University.

Estancia falls to 0-7, 0-6.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 13, Laguna Hills 11--Aliso Niguel (9-3, 5-0) had 17 hits and moved alone into first place. Nick Orlandos was four for four with a home run. Teammate Sean Stutzman had a home run and drove in four runs. Laguna Hills is 8-4, 4-1.

In the Century League:

No. 8 Foothill 5, Santa Ana Valley 3--Peter Kazanjy (2-0) gave up three unearned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five for Foothill (8-2, 4-0). Santa Ana Valley (5-7, 1-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Knights rallied with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Orange 4, Villa Park 3--Chance Perry’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan Hagen for the victory. Derald Deason hit a three-run homer in the fifth for Orange (4-7, 2-3).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 2, Troy 1--Jessie Delgado’s RBI single in the fourth inning was the difference for La Habra (5-5, 3-1). Bubba Cauley (3-2) pitched a four-hitter to get the win.

Sunny Hills 4, No. 9 Fullerton 3 (8 innings)--George Sargent had two hits, two RBIs and scored the winning run in the eighth inning for Sunny Hills (6-5, 2-2). Host Fullerton is 7-3, 3-2.

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 1 La Quinta 13, Los Amigos 3 (5, mercy)--Bobby Crosby had two hits, including a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs for La Quinta (13-0, 3-0). Teammate Beau Walters was two for two with three RBIs.

Garden Grove 7, Bolsa Grande 6--Chris Sween’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Garden Grove (6-5, 3-0) after Bolsa Grande (2-9, 1-3) tied the score with a run in the top of the inning.

Pacifica 4, Rancho Alamitos 0--Matt Huggett pitched a three-hitter and struck out five. Pacifica scored three runs in the first on three walks and a hit. The Mariners (5-6, 2-1) scored one in the second. Pacifica’s Jeff Davidson was one for two with two RBIs.

In the Golden West League:

Servite 4, Ocean View 2--Mike Montanio hit a two-run double in the first. Steve Ayers scored the game-winner in the second and Servite (9-1, 5-0) scored one more in the third. Ocean View (3-2 in league) scored in the third and sixth.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 2, Calvary Chapel 0--After a double steal in the sixth, Jon Moddock won it for Orange Lutheran (6-5, 3-2) with a two-run single. Mike Mattivi (2-0) threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. It was Coach John Malmquist’s 200th victory at Orange Lutheran.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 4, Savanna 3--Ron Benigno scored from second base in the seventh on Travis Long’s bunt single and pitcher David Beard’s error. Scott Davis (3-0) pitched a complete game and struck out two for host Brea Olinda (8-3-1, 4-0-1).

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Mater Dei 8, San Clemente 6--Brett Kay was four for four with three RBIs and Chris Hernandez also had three RBIs for visiting Mater Dei (10-1, 5-0). San Clemente (3-7, 1-4) scored twice in the seventh.

Capistrano Valley 6, Mission Viejo 4--Capistrano Valley’s Tom Pincott was two for four with four RBIs. Capistrano Valley starter Anthony Bingham (1-0) had five strikeouts in six innings.

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 19, Huntington Beach 14--Chad Lindholm had two hits, three RBIs and five runs scored in a victory for Los Alamitos (7-3-1, 3-1-1). Greg Castillo had two hits and three RBIs for the Griffins. Lindholm and Castillo each had a home run.

Jeff Ruziecki had one hit and two RBIs for Huntington Beach (6-5, 3-3).

Marina 6, Edison 4--Shaun Christmas gave up one hit through five innings to earn the victory for Marina (5-7, 3-2).
