Mentally Ill Man Stabs Mom

An 18-year-old man stabbed his mother seven times with a screwdriver Saturday in an argument over a few dollars, Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Brown said. The man has a mental illness and was not taking his medication, Brown said. The teen was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, he added.

The Laguna Hills woman, 40, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where she was in stable condition Saturday night. She was stabbed five times in the face, once in the chest and once in the abdomen, Brown said.

The argument apparently began when the son asked for $3 and his mother offered to give him $1, Brown said. The attack occurred near a bicycle trail under Pacific Park Drive.
