Forward Michelle French, Chaminade High’s career leader in assists, is one of three women’s soccer players signed by Cal State Northridge, Coach Brian Wiesner said Wednesday.

Northridge also signed Los Alamitos goaltender Jenny Willemse, who led the Griffins to the 1997 Southern Section Division I title, and sweeper Mia Nilsson, a native of Sweden from Citrus College.

La Canada forward Erin Broadwell also has committed to the Matadors.

BASKETBALL

Oshita to Humboldt: Ventura High guard Erin Oshita signed with Humboldt State.

Oshita is a two-time All-Channel League selection who led the Cougars in three-point accuracy and steals last season.

TRACK AND FIELD

Throwback: John Godina of Reebok and Suzy Powell and Seilala Sua of UCLA are scheduled to compete in the discus in the Antelope Valley College Throws Festival next Thursday.

Godina, two-time defending world champion in the shotput, was the No. 4-ranked discus thrower in the world in 1997 by Track & Field News magazine and finished fifth in the World Championships in Athens. He has a best of 221 feet 1 inch.

Powell, who has a best of 214-0 this year, was ranked first among U.S. women last year, and Sua, whose best is 209-8, was second.

The Throws Festival, which will start with the women’s discus at 12:30 p.m., was a staple on the U.S. track circuit from the mid-1960s to the early ‘70s because the Antelope Valley winds can improve discus throwers’ marks.

Jay Silvester of the U.S. set a then-world record of 230-11 in the 1971 meet, but that was the last time the competition was held until 1996.

It wasn’t held last year, but Antelope Valley College track Coach Mark Covert wants to make it an annual event that will include the shotput, discus and javelin plus high school competition.

BASEBALL

Day at the park: The City Section has tentatively agreed to play its 4-A and 3-A Division baseball finals on Thursday, June 11 at Dodger Stadium.

The City final was originally scheduled for June 5. The change will likely result in a week off between the semifinal and final games, allowing teams to use their No. 1 pitchers at Dodger Stadium.

The City regular season is scheduled to end on May 19. City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said the start of the playoffs might be delayed to allow for makeup games because of rain.

SOFTBALL

On the dotted line: Crescenta Valley High shortstop Becca Baldridge signed with San Jose State.
