Regals Hold Whittier Hitless--Twice

Cal Lutheran’s Kathy Proffitt pitched a no-hitter in the opener of a softball doubleheader against Whittier and Melissa Eichenberger threw a perfect game in the second game Saturday in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Cal Lutheran.

In the first game, a 4-0 Cal Lutheran victory, Proffitt (12-9) struck out three and Mandi Comer had two hits and two runs batted in.

In the second game, an 11-0 victory for the Regals, Eichenberger (8-4) struck out three and allowed no runners in a game called after 4 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.

Donna Scott hit a two-run double and Comer had two hits and two RBIs for Cal Lutheran (20-16, 11-1 in SCIAC play), which held a team hitless in a doubleheader for the first time since March 1996.

Whittier fell to 6-18, 1-9.

In other softball games:

New Mexico State 2-3, Cal State Northridge 1-6--Laura Redding homered and Chelo Lopez drove in two runs for the Matadors, who salvaged the second game of a Big West doubleheader in Las Cruces, N.M.

Lopez was three for eight for Northridge (31-16, 16-8), which entered the day with a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Long Beach State.

BASEBALL

Pepperdine 5-18, Santa Clara 4-2--Josh Oder’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie in the first game of a West Coast Conference doubleheader in Malibu.

Pepperdine (27-16, 16-4) secured the sweep with 23 hits in the second-game rout.

G.J. Raymundo hit his 10th and 11th home runs in the second game, and Chris Cosbey had three doubles.

CS Northridge 11, Kansas State 5-The Matadors (30-18) scored eight runs in their last two at-bats to erase a 5-3 deficit in Manhattan, Kan.

Nakia Hill, Marco Estrada and Ricky Helland each had three of the Matadors’ 17 hits. Darren Dyt tripled twice and Kevin Patrick tripled, singled and drove in three runs.

Left-hander Carey Novits (5-2) pitched his second complete game, striking out seven, walking two and allowing nine hits and three earned runs.

Cal Lutheran 23-15, La Verne 14-4--Cal Lutheran scored 10 runs in the top of the 11th inning to claim the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Brian Malchow was four for five, including two-run homers in the 10th and 11th, for the Kingsmen (21-6, 17-1), who combined with La Verne (5-27, 4-14) for 47 hits, a Cal Lutheran single-game record.

In the second game, Cal Lutheran freshman Tom Canale struck out 16, one shy of the school record, and Randel Flores had three hits and six RBIs.

The Master’s 5-7, Concordia 4-8--Aaron Penberthy was three for seven with two home runs and five RBIs for The Master’s, who set a school record for victories during a nonconference doubleheader split in Newhall.

The Mustangs (29-7) gave up four runs in the seventh inning to drop the second game, but were awarded a forfeit victory against Hawaii Pacific, clinching a berth in the NAIA Sectional playoffs.

Oxnard 10, Ventura 9--Kevin Mellinger scored from third on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to put the Condors (22-7, 13-3) ahead to stay in a Western State Conference North Division game at Ventura.

Mellinger had three hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in four runs. Ryan MacDonald had three hits and scored two runs for Oxnard.

Brian Riley had three hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth that drew the Pirates (11-17, 4-13) even. Riley also scored two runs and drove in five.

Pierce 3-13, Glendale 1-15--Pierce’s Danny Phillips hit a home run in each game of the WSC South Division doubleheader at Pierce. His two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in the seven-inning first game.

Left-hander Barry Zito (8-1) tossed a two-hitter for Pierce (18-13, 11-8) in the first game. Glendale (20-12, 12-7) hammered 21 hits in the second game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 6, Loyola Marymount 3--The host Matadors won all three doubles sets to prevail in a nonconference match.

Nely Horowic and Isabella Peintner won at No. 1 doubles for Northridge (17-5), which entered doubles play tied at 3-3 with Loyola Marymount (7-14).
