Smith and Hart Top the Foothill Standings in Golf

Charlie Smith fired a one-under-par 60 and Ryan Wyman shot a 62 for Hart High in the second of five Foothill League matches at Vista Valencia Golf Course on Tuesday.

Smith moved into first in the individual race with a total of 143, two strokes ahead of Wyman.

Hart leads the team race with 12 points, three better than Valencia and five ahead of Canyon.

Notre Dame 195, Crespi 204--Kevin Coghlan shot an even-par 35 for the Knights (14-3, 10-1) in a Mission League victory at Woodland Hills Country Club.

LACES 221, Van Nuys 233--Daniel Assael and Tre Vucharatavintara shot four-over-par 42s for LACES (6-2-1, 5-2-1) in a City League 2 meet at Encino Golf Course.

Westlake 388, Simi Valley 394--Chad Wensel and Brad Burke each shot four-over-par 75 for the Warriors in a nonleague victory at Simi Hills Golf Course.

Jeff Honaker of Simi Valley (10-3-1) shot 74 and J.T. Kohut had a 79 for Westlake.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy d. Granada Hills, 16-14, 15-7, 2-15, 7-15, 15-6--Danny Brookshire had 31 kills and Jason Abel added 18 kills and had five blocks for the Golden Cougars, who were without Jeff Toon, in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Granada Hills.

Toon, who has signed with Cal State Northridge, sprained his ankle in the Tournament of Champions last weekend at Northridge and will miss the rest of this week.

Mike Aleman had 25 kills, Chris Martin had 18 kills and 14 blocks, and Frank Nguyen added 68 assists for Granada Hills (8-3, 5-3).

Taft d. Birmingham, 15-6, 15-5, 15-3--Elan Yakovee had nine kills and Ron Tsao had five blocks for Taft (10-0, 8-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Birmingham.

Buena d. Ventura 15,9 15-7, 15-9--Billy Thomas had 11 kills and Danny Thompson added six for the Bulldogs (5-4, 3-3) in a Channel League victory at Ventura.

Campbell Hall d. Crossroads, 15-7, 15-7, 15-1--Larry Cole had 14 kills and five aces, and Jon Drexler contributed 10 kills and six aces for the Vikings (9-1, 6-0) in a Delphic League victory at Campbell Hall.

Saugus d. Hart, 15-5, 15-0, 15-10--Jeff Steele had 10 kills for the Centurions (7-1, 4-0) in a Foothill League victory at Hart.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Harvard-Westlake 13, St. Francis 5--Brian Shafa and Avi Kahan lost two games in three sets at No. 2 doubles for the Wolverines (11-2, 6-0) in a Mission League match at St. Francis (3-9, 0-6).

St. Bonaventure 18, Bishop Diego 0--Freshman John Vigorita did not lose a game in three sets at No. 3 singles for St. Bonaventure (10-0, 4-0) in a Tri-Valley League match at Bishop Diego (0-9, 0-4).

Van Nuys 6, Monroe 1--Vincent Hsu at No. 1 singles and Sammy Choo at No. 2 singles pulled out three-set victories for the Wolves (10-2, 9-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Monroe (9-3, 7-2).

Thomas Ji and Jerry Yang of Monroe scored a 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Glendon Woo and Kenny Han.

Grant 5, Poly 2--Jorge Flores defeated Marco Ceballos at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 7-5, for the Lancers (7-5, 5-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Poly (4-8, 3-6).

GIRLS’ TRACK

Simi Valley 70, Channel Islands 47, Agoura 43--In an unusual triple, Emb Nixon won the 100 meters in 12.3 seconds, the 200 in 26.4 and the 800 in 2:34.8 for Channel Islands in a Marmonte League meet at Simi Valley.

Thousand Oaks 83, Newbury Park 57, Westlake 30--Freshman Jennifer Turk pulled off a double upset for Newbury Park (7-4, 2-3), winning the 800 meters in 2:29.2 and the 1,600 in 5:30.1 over more seasoned Thousand Oaks runners in a Marmonte League meet at Thousand Oaks (4-0, 4-0).

Jenny Kenyon won the 100 meters in 12.4 and the 200 meters in 26.1 for Newbury Park.

BOYS’ TRACK

Newbury Park 76, Thousand Oaks 62, Westlake 29--Paul Sangalang of Thousand Oaks edged Newbury Park’s Patrick Dolan to win the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.3 seconds in a Marmonte League meet at Thousand Oaks.

Sangalang clocked 14.8 to win the 110 high hurdles for the Lancers (3-1, 3-1).

Ryan Hurley won the discus at 153-3 for Newbury Park (9-1, 5-0) and Mike Seidman of Westlake put the shot 53-7.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Harvard-Westlake 100 1/2, Loyola 85 1/2--Collin Kliner won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.57 and the 500 freestyle in 5:01.58 to help the Wolverines defeat Loyola for the first time in eight years in a Mission League meet.

Phil Spataru won the 100 freestyle in 51.29 and Dan Song, Greg Kim, Mike Crosby and David Frank combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:42.70 for Harvard-Westlake (2-0, 2-0).
