Woodbridge Scores Early in 3-1 Victory

Woodbridge got two runs in the first inning, leading the Warriors to a 3-1 victory over Santa Margarita in Sea View League softball Friday at Anton Park.

The fourth-ranked Warriors scored twice in the first on three hits, knocking out Lisa Carr (4-2) after she faced only seven batters.

Carr got the first two batters to fly out before Nichole Thompson doubled, Brittany Ziegler reached on a bunt single and Erica Greenberg walked to load the bases. Kristy Clarke singled in Thompson and Carr walked in the next run.

Woodbridge took a 3-0 lead in the third on consecutive doubles by Ziegler and Greenberg, both of whom were two for three.

Senior Christy Robitaille gave up one run and four hits, striking out 15 and walking one, for Woodbridge (21-4, 3-0). No. 10 Santa Margarita is 13-6-1, 1-2.

In another league game:

Irvine 6, Newport Harbor 0--Kari Singley pitched a two-hitter for Irvine (17-3, 2-1). Teammate Brett Nakabayashi had two hits and an RBI.

In the Century League:

Canyon 7, Santa Ana Valley 2--Meghan Goldstein had three hits and two RBIs and Becky Tippets had three hits and a run scored for Canyon (15-10, 2-2).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 4, Santa Ana 1--Leah Gulla singled in the fourth with one out to give Ocean View (13-8, 3-1) a 2-1 lead. Gulla was three for three, including a triple, scored two runs and had two stolen bases.

In the Express League:

Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 5, Liberty Christian 4--Kim Acedo hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to rally Pioneer Baptist (9-3-1, 4-0). Liberty Christian falls to 6-5, 3-1.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 5, Capistrano Valley 0--San Clemente’s Christy Bennett became the first person in 17 years to homer over the left-field fence when she hit a solo shot onto the tennis courts at San Clemente.

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 5, Esperanza 0--Sara Kahler’s three-run homer in the fourth gave visiting Los Alamitos a five-run lead. The Griffins (9-8, 2-2) scored four runs in the inning.

In Golden West League badminton:

Westminster 10, Ocean View 9--Trang Hoang and Melissa Martinez won in doubles, 15-3, 15-3, to lift Westminster (7-1 in league). Ocean View’s Huy Le and Thao Nguyen improved to 11-0 in mixed doubles. Ocean View is 8-4, 6-2.

In Empire League golf:

No. 9 Sunny Hills 196, El Dorado 215--Dusty Schmidt had two birdies in a two-under-par 33 to lead Sunny Hills (10-4, 6-0) at Western Hills. Corey Fox shot 37 for El Dorado (9-5, 2-3).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Villa Park 104, San Marino 66--Senior Kyle Baumgarner, after taking a few weeks off due to an injured ankle, won the 50 (22.03) and 100 freestyles (49.78). Baumgarner also was on two of the three winning relays for Villa Park (9-1).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Orange 85, Katella 81--Shannon Flahive of Orange won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.57 and the 500 freestyle (5:40.06). Flahive was also on two of the winning relays.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

El Dorado 3, Valencia 1--Matt Peacock had 15 kills and Aaron Mills had 11 for El Dorado, which won, 15-6, 15-6, 13-15, 15-11. Danny Ortega and Jeff Ginter each had 11 for Valencia (13-3, 8-2). El Dorado is 13-1, 10-0.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 3, Santiago 0--Roland Quach had 27 assists and Brian Leiataua had seven kills for visiting Garden Grove, which won, 15-4, 15-7, 15-7. The Argonauts are 4-7, 4-4.

Los Amigos 3, Pacifica 0--Lam Dinh had 10 kills and Keri Niumata eight for first-place Los Amigos (12-1, 9-0), which won, 15-2, 15-8, 15-10.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 3 Laguna Beach 3, University 0--Tyler Reynard had 14 kills as Laguna Beach won 15-2, 15-9, 15-7. The Artists are 10-1, 6-0.

University is 3-3 in league.

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Santa Margarita 3, No. 2 Corona del Mar 1--Marcus Skacel had 25 digs as Santa Margarita (10-2, 5-1) rallied to win, 12-15, 15-13, 15-7, 15-8. Setter Andy Mauro had 83 assists for the Eagles. Corona del Mar is 8-4, 3-3.

In the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 3, Hanford 0--Al Limon and Scott Archbold each had six kills for Newport Harbor (11-0), which advanced to today’s semifinals with a 15-0, 15-12, 15-3 victory.
