Lightbody Throws His Weight Around at Arcadia Invitational

Sam Lightbody put in a heavy-duty day.

Lightbody, a senior at Huntington Beach, won the shotput and discus events at the Orange County Championships Saturday at Trabuco Hills High. Then that evening, he improved on his winning discus throw of 170 feet 3 inches with a toss of 170-10 to finish fourth at the Arcadia Invitational.

Lightbody took advantage of a Southern Section ruling last week that allowed athletes to compete in two meets on the same day because the Arcadia Invitational had been rained out April 11. It was rescheduled to Saturday, the same day as the county championships.

Trabuco Hills senior Darnesha Griffith also made good use of the section’s one-time ruling. She leaped 18-5 to finish second in the long jump at Arcadia. Earlier, she won at the county championships with a mark of 18-2.

Neither Liz Morse of Corona del Mar nor University’s Allyson Marquand participated in the county championships. But Morse finished third in the 1,600 in 5 minutes 6.01 seconds, and Marquand was third in the 3,200 in 10:43.35.

University’s Martin Brix was third in the 1,600 in 4:17.15.
