TRACK AND FIELD

Good show: The Cal State Northridge women’s team, paced by hammer throw champion Christina Tolson, placed fourth in the California-Nevada championships Saturday and Sunday at Radcliffe Stadium in Fresno.

Tolson, a sophomore, set a meet and Matador record of 194 feet 3 inches in the hammer and placed sixth in the shotput at 49-1 3/4.

Northridge totaled 85 points to finish behind UCLA (145), Fresno State (100 1/2) and San Diego State (91).

Northridge finished 10th in the men’s meet.

Out of commission: Northridge senior Joe Criner set a school record of 10.30 seconds in the men’s 100 meters and placed second in a heat of the California-Nevada championships on Saturday, but strained a hamstring in the final on Sunday and failed to finish.

Criner, who ran a wind-aided 20.14 in the 200 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on April 18, anchored Northridge to a third-place time of 40.77 in the 400 relay before the final of the 100.

“He made up so much ground on the anchor leg of the 400 relay that that was a huge effort,” Coach Don Strametz said. “That and the combination of running races in consecutive days for the first time this season might have just been too much.”

SOCCER

Blast bonanza: Two more more players from the Valley United Blast’s under-18 boys club have committed to college programs and a third has signed, bringing to seven the number of Blast players who will play in college next season.

Blast Coach Adolfo Perez said Monday that Justin Canel has committed to Santa Clara and Justin Spina has committed to UC Irvine. Both attend Crespi High. Perez said Oak Park’s Aaron Benditson has signed with Sacramento State.

Other Blast members who have committed include Harvard-Westlake’s Zach Schwartz (Dartmouth), Camarillo’s Chad Schutt, Buena’s Mike Bradbury (San Diego State) and Crespi’s Bharat Sahgal (Boston University).

Kennedy’s Greg Avila, another team member, is expected to commit to UC Santa Barbara, Perez said.

Forcing the issue: The L.A. Force girls’ under-16 club team has advanced to the age group’s national semifinals, May 9 in San Bernardino, where it will play Laguna Nigel’s Southern California Blues, the defending national champion.

Players on the Force include Chaminade High’s Kim Taylor and Mindy Wyatt, Harvard-Westlake’s Molly Cahan and Imani Dorsey, Birmingham’s Errin Smith, Cleveland’s Brynne Blumstein and La Reina’s Sara Leibowitz. The team is 16-0 and has outscored its past four opponents, 13-0.

SOFTBALL

Back in action: El Camino Real pitcher Ashley Redlin is expected to see her first action of the season this week after giving birth to a daughter earlier this month.

Redlin, a junior right-hander who was 12-3 with a 1.46 earned-run average last season for the two-time defending City 4-A champions, probably will not start but may pitch in relief when El Camino Real (13-2, 6-0) plays West Valley League games today at Chatsworth and Thursday at Birmingham, Coach Neils Ludlow said. El Camino Real also may play Granada Hills in a makeup game Wednesday or Friday.

“We expect to get her some innings this week, and we’ll just kind of see how it goes, and how she responds,” Ludlow said.
