BRIGHAM YOUNG / TRACK AND FIELD

* County connections: Courtney Pugmire Meldrum of Esperanza.

* Worth noting: Meldrum was named Western Athletic Conference women’s track athlete of the week last week, when she won the 3,000-meter run at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational. It was the first time she had raced in the 3,000 this season, and she finished in 9 minutes 19.13 seconds. Meldrum is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships in the 5,000 with a time of 16:14.43.

C.W. POST / SOFTBALL

* County connections: Kim Fischer of Irvine High.

* Worth noting: Fischer, a senior center fielder, is ending her college career with a flourish. She is hitting .343 with 26 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. The Pioneers (29-4) are on a 23-game winning streak, which is the longest in school history in any sport. Post, which is located in Brookville, N.Y., is ranked 18th nationally in Division II. Fischer had never missed playing in a college softball game in four years until April 18, when she took the day off to take a teachers’ certification exam.

SAN DIEGO / LACROSSE

* County connection: Erin White of Villa Park High.

* Worth noting: White, a freshman attack-wing who never played lacrosse before this season, scored one goal and had three assists Sunday in helping the Toreros (10-2) defeat Loyola Marymount, 12-5, to win the Division II Southern California Women’s Intercollegiate Lacrosse Conference championship. White scored one goal in USD’s 21-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara in Saturday’s semifinal.

MIAMI OF OHIO / SOFTBALL

* County connections: Laura and Lesley Fulton of Rosary and Jenny Beltran of Foothill.

* Worth noting: Laura, a freshman second baseman, is batting .327 with six doubles, one triple and 12 runs batted in for Miami (22-24). Her twin sister Lesley, shortstop, is batting .286 with six doubles, one triple, one homer and 20 RBIs. Beltran, a freshman third baseman, is batting .318 with seven doubles, one triple and 18 RBIs.--BOB ROHWER
