High in the Sky: Senior Joe Criner and sophomore Christina Tolson of Cal State Northridge have been honored as Big Sky Conference athletes of the week.

Criner was selected Big Sky men’s track athlete of the week for the third time this season after setting a school record of 10.30 seconds in a qualifying heat of the California-Nevada championships at Radcliffe Stadium in Fresno on Saturday.

Criner, who also won his qualifying heat in the 200 in 21.28 in the California-Nevada meet, anchored Northridge to a third-place time of 40.77 in the 400 relay on Sunday, but failed to finish the 100 final after straining a hamstring during the race.

Tolson was selected Big Sky women’s field event athlete of the week for the second time this season after winning the hammer throw with a school and conference record of 194 feet 3 inches in the California-Nevada meet. She also placed sixth in the shotput at 49-1 3/4.

Matadors to be: Sarah Bonilla of Brea Olinda High and Genia Seymore of Barstow have signed letters of intent with Cal State Northridge.

FOOTBALL

Academic champion: Westlake High won the Southern Section football academic championship for schools with an enrollment of more than 1,499 students. The team was honored for the second consecutive season after it earned a collective 3.01 grade-point average for the 1997-98 fall semester.

The Warriors will receive a team academic championship banner at Edison Field before the Angels’ game May 6.
