Romar Ties Birmingham Record by Shooting a 66

Junior Keith Romar of Birmingham High tied a 31-year-old school record by shooting five-under-par 66 in a three-way City 5 League golf match Wednesday against Grant and Palisades at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills.

Romar made six birdies and a bogey while shooting the low round in relation to par during high school play in the region this season. His score tied the record set in 1967 by former U.S. Amateur champion Mitch Voges.

Palisades won the match by shooting a team score of 393. Grant had 423 and Birmingham finished with 431.

Notre Dame 190, Chaminade 192--Tommy Barber had three birdies and two bogeys en route to a one-under-par 34 for the Knights (18-3, 12-1 in league play) in a Mission League victory at De Bell Golf Course in Burbank.

L.A. CES 215, Sylmar 224--Michael Briano shot a 35 for the Spartans (5-3-1, 5-3-1) in a City 2 League loss at Rancho Park Golf Course in West Los Angeles.

Flintridge Prep 219, Cathedral 256--Andy Brisbois shot three-over-par 40 for the Rebels (16-2, 9-1) in a Prep League victory at Harding Park Golf Course in Griffith Park.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Van Nuys 29 1/2, Belmont 0--Vincent Hsu won four matches by 6-0 scores for the defending champion and second-seeded Wolves in a City Section 3-A first-round playoff match at Van Nuys.

No. 2 player Sammy Choo defeated the same opponents by 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 scores for Van Nuys (12-2), which has won 11 consecutive matches.

Granada Hills 29 1/2, Venice 0--Deepu Murthy swept four singles sets without losing a game at No. 3 singles, and Nathen Kim and Ali Ghods dropped only two games in three sets at No. 3 doubles for the third-seeded Highlanders in a City Section 4-A quarterfinal match at Cal State Northridge.

Chris Yoo won three sets by 6-1 scores and another by 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the third-seeded Highlanders (12-2), who lost to Palisades in last year’s 4-A title match.

Monroe 15, San Pedro 14 1/2--Robbie Parras, Danny Rubin and Joseph Jung each won three of four singles sets for the Vikings (11-3) and the No. 3 doubles team of Billy Cutler and Charlie Fragozo upset San Pedro’s No. 1 doubles team in a first-round City Section 3-A Division victory at Monroe.

Thousand Oaks 13, Newbury Park 5--Willie Mullin won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for the Lancers, and the No. 2 doubles team of Mike Hastings and Arvind Masan swept, 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, in a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park.

Camarillo 18, Channel Islands 0--No. 1 Mike Mancini and No. 2 Quoc Ly each lost only one game in a Marmonte League sweep for the Scorpions at Camarillo (5-10, 4-7).

SOFTBALL

Louisville 7, Alemany 1--Christina Jordt had two hits and two runs batted in to help the Royals (9-7, 3-1) beat the Indians for the first time in at least six years in a Mission League game at Tarzana Park.

Jordt hit an RBI single in Louisville’s five-run first inning and also had a run-scoring triple.

Montclair Prep 5, Grace Brethren 1--Laura Power (6-5) pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Mounties (6-5) in a victory at Grace Brethren.

Power had two hits, including a run-scoring double, while freshman Melissa Gonzales drove in two runs with two hits for the Mounties.

Chaminade 4, Notre Dame 0--Maureen LeCocq pitched her ninth shutout of the season and fourth in Mission League play on a three-hitter at Chaminade.

LeCocq struck out nine and walked none while lowering her earned-run average to 0.16. She singled twice and scored twice for Chaminade (10-7-1, 4-0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar d. Grant, 15-9, 15-6, 15-6--Ervin Gonzalez had 10 kills and four blocks to help the Spartans (9-4, 7-3) win an East Valley League match at Sylmar.

Ron Roiz had nine kills and Krishna Evans had seven blocks for Grant (6-7, 3-7).

Poly d. North Hollywood, 12-15, 15-1, 15-2, 15-1--Gilbert Ramos had 24 kills, 20 assists and five aces for Poly (11-2, 8-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at North Hollywood.

Highland d. Lancaster, 15-2, 15-12, 15-11--Mike Wagner had 17 kills and 21 digs for the Bulldogs (7-4, 4-3) in a Golden League victory at Highland.

Littlerock d. Antelope Valley, 6-15, 16-14, 15-8, 15-13--Chris Gorny had 22 kills and nine blocks, Marc Mailander had 15 kills and 12 digs and Chris Larson had 10 blocks and a school-record 10 aces for the Lobos (11-2, 6-1) in a Golden League victory at Antelope Valley (8-4, 4-3).

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-3, 15-7, 15-2--David Clark had nine kills and Cam Dickson had seven kills and four blocks for the Highlanders (13-1, 12-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Royal.

Oliver Bell had seven kills for Simi Valley (11-6).

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Burbank 102, Valencia 34--Daniel Sandoval won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.28 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.11, and swam in two winning relays to help the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) win a Foothill League meet at Santa Clarita Pool.

TRACK AND FIELD

Nordhoff 72, Moorpark 55--Matthew Torres and Josh Labrot each won two individual events to give the Rangers (7-1, 5-0) a victory at Nordhoff and their seventh Frontier League boys’ title in eight years.

Nordhoff 75, Moorpark 57--Elaine Canchola and Cheri Green each won two individual events to give the Rangers (8-0, 5-0) a victory at Nordhoff and their eighth consecutive Frontier League girls’ title.
