Ponciano Selects Starters for Opener at Boise State

Cal State Northridge football Coach Ron Ponciano on Thursday announced the starters for the opener at Division I Boise State on Sept. 5.

The offense is as follows: Marcus Brady, quarterback; Melvin Blue, running back; Aaron Arnold, Drew Hill, Mike Ogas and Eric Carpenter, receivers; David San Vicente, left tackle; Taffe Aina, left guard; Beau Cherry, center; Mike Barnes, right guard and Keith Kincaid, right tackle. Ryan Schatz will play tight end in certain situations.

The defense features Patrick Cwik, end; Ryan Hourigan, left tackle; Sean Beard, nose guard; Erik Gardner, right tackle; Shayne Blakey, Cos Abercrombie and Brennen Swanson, linebackers; Chazz Moore and Donnell Day, cornerbacks; Vito Clemente, strong safety and Jeremy Golden, free safety.

The kicker is Manny Marquez and the punter is Ethan Beck.

Athletic Director Paul Bubb said Northridge football games will be broadcast live on KCSN-FM (88.5) and on a same-day delay basis over Cable Radio Network.

The games also will be heard live by accessing Northridge’s web site at www.csun.eduathletics.

Wide receiver James Maldonado, a senior transfer from Kent State, returned to the Matadors after quitting last week.

Ponciano said Maldonado had “personal problems” and apologized to coaches.

Northridge offensive coordinator Rob Phenicie said it was a sign of the times.

He reached into his shorts’ pocket after one recent practice and pulled out receiver Aaron Arnold’s earrings.

“I’m a coach of the ‘90s,” Phenicie said.
