Woodbridge vs. Santa Margarita

RECORDS--Woodbridge 12-0-1; Santa Margarita 10-3

SITE--Cal State Fullerton, 7:30

SANTA MARGARITA--The Eagles finished third in the Sea View League after being ranked in the top three in the division all season. Though unseeded, the two-time defending Southern Section champions began their playoff run against third-seeded Aliso Niguel with a 28-14 victory. They defeated Tustin, 28-19, in a rematch of last year’s Division V section final, then avenged a 42-18 loss to Irvine in Week 9 by scoring a 17-0 semifinal victory. Santa Margarita’s 20-12 loss to Woodbridge in Week 10 featured an offensive performance that managed just two drives longer than 21 yards and four turnovers in the Eagles’ territory. Still, they outgained Woodbridge, 245-222. Quarterback Greg Orlando has passed for 1,707 yards and 15 touchdowns with six interceptions, rushed for 782 yards (5.1 per carry) and eight touchdowns, and caught a 79-yard touchdown pass. Spencer McCroskey has rushed for 1,061 yards (5.0 per carry) and 10 touchdowns. Mike O’Gorman (55 receptions, nine touchdowns) needs only four receptions to have the county’s third-best total. Kicker Matt Froehlich (10 of 17 field goals) has a range of about 44 yards.

WOODBRIDGE--The Warriors, who went into last season having gone 25 games without a victory, can end this season without a defeat. The defense, led by lineman Rael Berkowitz, linebacker Eric Jensen and safety Shane Harris, has given up one touchdown in three playoff victories. Only five times in 13 games has Woodbridge allowed as many as two touchdowns (Santa Margarita was one of those opponents). Woodbridge’s conservative nature suits its players; the Warriors know their limitations but often play flawlessly. They thrive on their opponents’ mistakes. Against Santa Margarita, the Warriors’ scoring drives began at their 34 and, after turnovers, the Eagles’ 36, 31 and 33. Scott Barlow (2,069 yards, 21 touchdowns, six interceptions) has completed 60.8% of his passes and has a nice target over the middle in tight end Zach Foster (6-4, 240). Brandon Runk (930 yards) is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and Shane Harris (832 yards) is averaging 7.6. Speedy receiver Oren Masserman (34 catches, 18.4 yards per reception) provides quick-strike capability. Steve Terwiske has 13 field goals, including a 43-yarder against the Eagles.

KEYS TO THE GAME--Field position probably determines the winner. Santa Margarita can’t turn the ball over as it did in the first meeting and expect to win. Woodbridge is as good as anyone at finishing its opportunities, and a boring game suits the Warriors fine.
