It took 13 games and all but 32 seconds of the 14th, but the Chino High football team, playing with the memory of deceased teammate Scott Maughan as inspiration, finally ran out of miracles Friday night at Citrus College.

Diamond Bar defensive back Dominic Robinson intercepted a pass by Chino quarterback Brent Baier on a desperation, fourth-and-15 play from the Chino 19-yard line to preserve a 21-19 victory and the Southern Section Division II championship.

It also ended a 26-game win streak for Chino (13-1) and dashed the Cowboys’ hopes of winning a championship for Maughan, who died of a head injury suffered during practice before the first game this season.

Both teams knelt in prayer at midfield after postgame handshakes.

Jason Wright, a junior for Diamond Bar (13-1), rushed for 164 yards and all three touchdowns in 19 carries. His 20-yard score late in the third quarter and the extra point gave the Brahmas a 21-13 lead.

Travon Walton, who had 157 yards in 28 carries for Chino, turned a screen pass from Baier into a 36-yard touchdown play to pull the Cowboys within 21-19 with 8:41 to play, but the two-point conversion failed when Baier was stopped on a bootleg.
