Stein Named All-American

Long Beach quarterback Sean Stein, a former Los Alamitos High standout, was a J.C. Grid-Wire second-team All-American pick and three players from Orange County teams were honorable-mention picks.

Stein led Long Beach to a 10-1 record.

Wide receivers Ivan Mercer (Orange Coast) and Paul Tessier (Golden West) and Saddleback linebacker Brian Berg were honorable-mention selections.

Berg was also a first-team scholar athlete.

Linebacker Chris Clayton (Orange Coast) was an honorable mention scholar athlete selection.

Cypress freshman midfielder Jane Specht and Orange Coast sophomore sweeper Mary Peters were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Assn. Western regional team.

Specht scored 24 goals and helped Cypress to a state title and Peters was selected as the most valuable player of the Orange Empire Conference.
