Armendariz Leads Brea Olinda’s Charge Into Second Round

Jeri Armendariz scored 11 points, had five assists and nine steals to help carry top-ranked Brea Olinda past Orem (Utah), 62-36, in Friday’s first round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions’ national division.

Armendariz and Lindsey Davidson (13 points) carried Brea in the first half when Orem, last year’s Utah state runner-up, triple-teamed 6-foot-3 Chelsea Trotter in a physical game under the basket.

Davidson and Jackie Lord hit three-point baskets, sparking a 14-0 second-quarter run that gave the Ladycats a 27-16 halftime lead. Trotter scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half. Jeri Costello had five assists and four steals for Brea, which plays defending tournament and New York state champion Queens Christ the King, which beat Eastlake (Ohio) North.

In the Gold Division:

Mater Dei 59, Chaparral 21 (Ariz.)--Lindsay Pavlik scored 16 points for fifth-ranked Mater Dei. Mater Dei (6-1) took a 27-14 halftime lead and held Chaparral to two points in the fourth quarter.

Edison 47, Arroyo Grande 31--Allison Libeau scored eight of her 13 points in a 22-5 third quarter to lift sixth-ranked Edison (6-1), which had trailed by three at halftime. Christina Patterson (11 points) and Michelle Zylstra (nine points, 12 rebounds) scored five each in the decisive third quarter. The Chargers didn’t allow any Arroyo Grande player to score in double figures, and only three to score as many as six points.

Esperanza 44, North Torrance 41--Bethany Blair had 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals for seventh-ranked Esperanza (5-1), which took an 18-5 first-quarter lead. Former Woodbridge player Kari Duperron scored 26 for North Torrance (4-2).

El Toro 56, Port Moody (B.C.) 19--The second-ranked Chargers (5-1) took a 33-2 halftime lead over Port Moody (12-4), which trailed, 43-9, after three quarters. Sisters Giuliana and Gioconda Mendiola scored 16 apiece.

San Clemente 63, Poway 47--Whitney Jones and Colleen Turnbull each scored 13 points to lift the Tritons (4-3). Debbie Caine had 12 points and Merissa Ficklin 10 for San Clemente.

In the Green Division:

Fountain Valley 73, Stevenson Prep 43--Alison Fujii scored 17 points and Lindsay King had 15 to lead Fountain Valley.
