Buena Builds More Steam in 47-38 Win

Buena High won its second game in a row after a first-round loss in the Santa Barbara tournament, defeating Orem (Utah), 47-38, Monday to advance to the consolation final at UC Santa Barbara.

The Bulldogs (7-1), ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, held Orem to 13 first-half points and will play South Sioux City (Neb.) today at 1 at Santa Barbara College.

Courtney LaVere, a 6-2 freshman center, had 19 points for Buena. Guard Kelly Murray had 10 points.

Channel Islands 55, Arroyo Grande 50--Jaline Bradley scored 24 points for Channel Islands (7-3), which won a third-round Gold Division game in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Chenne Tuimoloau had six points and Monique Taylor had nine points for Channel Islands.

Amanda Andrews and Liz Forbes each had 14 points for Arroyo Grande.

Ventura 42, Chino 33--Alex Gientke made seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter for Ventura in a Gold Division ninth-place quarterfinal game in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Gientke was eight of 10 from the line and finished with 12 points in the game. As a team, eighth-ranked Ventura (5-3) made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Kristine Gleisberg had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars and Estelle Diaz grabbed seven rebounds.

Santa Ynez 44, Nordhoff 22--Sarah McClurg of Santa Ynez scored all of her game-high 17 points in the second half of the Green Division consolation semifinal in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Alemany 59, Littlerock 56--Kate Beckler made two free throws with 18 seconds to play in pool play of the Simi Valley tournament.

Beckler scored 22 points and had three assists for Alemany (6-1), ranked seventh in The Times’ regional poll. Anna Karas had seven points and five rebounds.

Jolene Haywood had 25 points, including two three-point baskets, for Littlerock. Kristel Jones had 10 points.

El Camino Real 63, Saugus 60--The Conquistadores nearly squandered an 11-point fourth-quarter lead but held on to defeat Saugus for the second time this season in a pool-play game in the Simi Valley tournament.

Christina Aguinaga led El Camino Real (6-3) with 21 points and six assists. Cara Blumfield had 13 points and nine steals. Karen Shun had 15 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Leslie Johnson had 22 points and Lexi Phelps had 20 points for Saugus (6-3).

St. Bonaventure 47, Santa Clara 42--Stacey Howard made 10 of 13 free throws and finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, and the Seraphs (5-4) won a nonleague game at St. Bonaventure.

Shannon Fink, who scored nine points, held Santa Clara’s Ashley Biggs to 16 points.
