Al Nordquist Is Voted Into to JC Coaches’ Hall of Fame

Al Nordquist, former coach at Moorpark College, has been elected to the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Assn. Hall of Fame.

Nordquist will be inducted March 11 along with former Long Beach player Chuck Terry and coaches Frank Carbajal of Hartnell and Jack Bogdanovich of Cerritos.

The ceremony will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Costa Mesa in conjunction with the 1999 JC state tournament, which runs March 11-13 at UC Irvine.

Nordquist, president of the CCCMBCA, coached at Moorpark from 1967 through 1995, guiding the Raiders to a 482-376 record and 13 postseason appearances.

CROSS-COUNTRY

La Canada High, which won its second consecutive state Division III girls’ title last month, is ranked ninth in Harrier magazine’s final national poll.

The Spartans were ranked 22nd in the previous poll before defeating runner-up Redding Foothill, 46-96, in the state meet.

Their No. 9-ranking is the highest by a girls’ team from the region since Nordhoff was ranked fifth in 1995.

Saugus is ranked 22nd in the boys’ poll.

The Centurions, with senior Dan Klawer finishing seventh, placed third in the state Division I final, two points behind No. 9 Long Beach Poly and a point back of No. 13 Santa Ana.

VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge’s men began two-a-day preseason practices Monday.

Northridge opens its exhibition season Jan. 7 by playing host to the University of Calgary.

The regular season begins Jan. 15 when the Matadors play in the UC Santa Barbara tournament.

GOLF

Michael Park of La Crescenta and Jeffrey Osborn of Glendale were part of a three-way tie for second at 71 in the boys’ 14- and 15-year-olds’ division of the Southern California PGA Foundation Tournament of Junior Champions at Newport Beach Country Club.

Park, Osborn and Matt Amen of Yorba Linda finished one shot behind boys’ 14-15 winner Nicholas Bollini of Yorba Linda.

SOFTBALL

Tryouts for the Valley Breeze 14-and-under fast-pitch softball club are scheduled for 10 a.m., Jan. 9 at Pierce College and 9 a.m., Jan. 16 at El Cariso Park in Sylmar.

The Southern California Riptides, a new 18-and-under girls’ fast-pitch softball team, will be holding tryouts on Jan. 10.
