Titans’ Webster, Coughran Take Wrestling Titles

Joey Coughran and Jason Webster of Cal State Fullerton each captured their weight class championships Saturday at the 22nd annual California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at San Francisco State.

Coughran won the 126-pound title with a 3-2 decision over David Yi of UC Davis. Webster decisioned Mike Grant of Stanford in the 167-pound class, 6-3.

Fullerton finished fifth overall in the team standings with a score of 54.4, well behind champion Cal State Bakersfield’s score of 97.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 69, Concordia 60--Priscilla Bendik scored 18 points and had nine rebounds for Concordia (18-6, 5-2).

Heather Carll and Jamie Gast each had 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

In Big West Conference men’s swimming and diving:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 165, UC Irvine 133--Freshman Andy Coffman won the 200-meter freestyle in a time of 1:46.31 and Dan Klatt (55.50) finished first in the 100-meter backstroke for UC Irvine.

In one-meter diving, the Anteaters swept the top three spots, led by Josh Toschi in first with 206.70 points. Jim Frazee (202.43) and Jason Berg (164.85) were second and third.

In Big West Conference women’s swimming and diving:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 165, UC Irvine 135--Gwen Yoshizumi’s first-place time of 2:11.21 in the 200-meter backstroke was her top time of the season in the event for UC Irvine. Yoshizumi also won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:00.48.

The Anteaters also won both diving events, with Arika Earley finishing first in the one-meter event with 274.50 points and Christy O’Grady (222.30) taking the top spot at three meters.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, USC 1--UC Irvine defeated USC for the first time in school history. After losing the first match, 14-16, Irvine took the next three, 15-13, 15-13, 15-10. Mike Rupt and Cory Weber had 33 and 32 kills, respectively, for Irvine (6-2, 2-2).
