Santa Margarita Wins Sixth Title in Row

Santa Margarita upset No. 4 Woodbridge, 3-0, Thursday at Santa Margarita, giving the Eagles their sixth consecutive Sea View League girls’ soccer title.

Woodbridge (11-6-4, 5-2-3), winless in its last three games, finished in second place.

Sara Henderson, Erin Egertson and Katie Frattone each scored for Santa Margarita (11-5-4, 7-1-2). Goalkeeper Erin Regan had three saves for the Eagles.

In another Sea View League game:

El Toro 1, Corona del Mar 0--Lauren Orlandos scored the winning goal four minutes into the second half for El Toro (10-7-1, 5-4-1) which clinches third place in league. Britta Vogele had nine saves for Corona del Mar (5-4-8, 2-3-5).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Annika Nagy scored two goals and had two assists for St. Margaret’s, which won the league title. Taylor Brown recorded her seventh shutout of the season for the Tartans (9-3, 8-0).

In the Century League:

Canyon 8, Orange 0--Rachelle Locke scored three goals, and Marlena Franciso added two, as Canyon (17-7, 8-2) won the league co-championship with El Modena. Canyon will get the top playoff spot from league, after defeating the Vanguards in both meetings.

El Modena 2, Villa Park 0--El Modena’s Kim Needham scored in the 16th minute and Vicki Bloom added one in the 41st minute for El Modena (13-9-1, 8-2). A.J. Reeder made five saves for her ninth shutout. The Vanguards, who lost to Canyon twice, head into the playoffs seeded second. Villa Park (11-11-1, 4-5-1) finished in fourth.

Foothill 4, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kristy Brittingham scored once and had two assists for Foothill (11-7-3, 7-3). Sharmaine Kendrick had six saves for Santa Ana Valley (8-9-4, 2-7-1).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 2, El Dorado 1--Jane Specht scored twice for Cypress (12-2-2, 8-0-2), which began the day in second place behind El Dorado (13-4-3, 8-1-1), but won the league title.

Kennedy 6, Loara 0--Kennedy scored five goals in the first half. Jenna Bernsten made three saves for Kennedy (13-5-3, 6-3-1), which finishes third. Loara finishes 4-13-3, 0-9-1.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 6, Buena Park 1--Sarah Gibson scored a goal in the first half and three in the second half to lead Sonora (14-4-5, 7-2-1) to a second-place finish in league.

Sunny Hills 2, Fullerton 1--Lauren Duggins scored 20 seconds into the game for Fullerton, but Sunny Hills answered 30 seconds later, when Renee Garand tied the score. Kelly Glover scored the winning goal with two minutes left in the first half for the league-champion Lancers (15-8-1, 9-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 1, Laguna Hills 1--Andrea Kosciuk scored with seven minutes remaining to tie the score for Laguna Hills (12-5-4, 6-2-2), which needed a victory to overtake Aliso Niguel (11-9-2, 7-2-1) for second place. Tina Patton’s goal with about 10 minutes left had given the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Laguna Hills finishes third.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 2, No. 3 Los Alamitos 1 (OT)--Kendra Aston scored the wining goal four minutes into overtime as Huntington Beach upset No. 3 Los Alamitos, knocking the Division I defending champions into second place. The Griffins (12-5-4, 5-4-1) were awarded two penalty kicks in overtime, but Oiler goalkeeper Blythe Curran made diving saves on both. Huntington Beach (9-10-3, 4-5-1), which had not won a league in the last six years, finished fourth.

No. 5 Edison 3, Marina 0--Edison won the league championship with second-half goals from Kristina Furniss and Amber Prestegard, who had two. Ali Nadler made two saves for her ninth shutout. Edison improved to 16-3-3, 6-3-1. Marina finishes 11-6-8, 2-4-4.

No. 9 Esperanza 3, Fountain Valley 0--Sophomore Kristin Skinner recorded her 10th shutout of the season as the Aztecs (14-6-3, 5-4-1) finished tied for third after starting off league play 0-4.
