Titans’ Whiteside Sidelined With Injury

Erin Whiteside, the starting center on the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team, will be out one to two weeks after dislocating a shoulder during a 74-55 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday.

Marty Albert has been named head football coach at Century High, boys’ Athletic Director Jeff Watts said. Albert had been an assistant coach at Century the last five years after coaching at Vista High. He replaces Bill Brown, who resigned at the end of last season.

Christina Gibbons, a pitcher at La Habra High, has made an oral commitment to attend Ball State, Highlander Coach Sue Briquelet said.

Gibbons, 18-7 with a 0.58 earned-run average, batted .400 with 19 runs batted in for the Highlanders last season.

Jason Thompson, a midfielder from Pasadena Muir, has signed to play soccer at UC Irvine, school officials said.

Thompson, a four-year starter at Muir, was selected first-team All-Pacific League last season. He was a second-team pick in 1996.

Vedda Desatoff, the Cypress College women’s soccer team’s all-time leading scorer, has signed a letter to attend San Diego State, Cypress spokesman Alan Lombardi said.

Desatoff, the 1997 athlete of the year in the Orange Empire Conference, scored 41 goals and had 34 assists in two seasons at Cypress.

Goalkeeper Dan Abdalla, a Trabuco Hills graduate, has signed with the Orange County Zodiac, an A-League soccer team associated with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Abdalla, who recently completed his bachelor’s degree at Nevada Las Vegas, is expected to compete with returning goalkeeper Marco Cerna for the starting spot. The Zodiac will begin its second season April 11, playing San Diego at UC Irvine.
