The Chaminade High boys’ basketball team said aloha to La Habra Sonora with a 55-46 overtime victory in the championship game of the St. Louis tournament in Hawaii on Tuesday night.

Scott Long, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Chaminade (10-1), the No. 2 team in The Times’ regional poll.

The Eagles trailed Sonora (11-3) most of the game but finally overtook the Raiders at the free-throw line. Chaminade made nine of 12 free-throw attempts in overtime.

Long, a 6-foot-5 forward who has accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy, made all four of his free throws in overtime and Robby Tanouye hit four of six.

Chaminade was behind, 28-18, at halftime and 36-28 after three quarters. Starting guard Cayce Cook fouled out with 5 1/2 minutes to go. But the Eagles got a big boost from Tanouye, who came off the bench and finished with seven points, including a three-point shot with 1:30 left that tied the score, 44-44, and sent the game into overtime.

Chaminade, which has won seven consecutive games since losing to top-ranked Simi Valley in the Simi Valley tournament, also got 10 points from Scott Borchart. The victory gave the Eagles their second tournament title in two weeks. Chaminade won its tournament last week.

Justin Stewart was also chosen to the all-tournament team.
