“We’ve come a light-year from where we were at this time last year.”

AGE: 59

HOME: Camarillo

PROFESSION: Planning president, Cal State University Channel Islands, since January 1996

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Gaining support from California State University system trustees to request $6.5 million from Gov. Pete Wilson to begin converting the old Camarillo State Hospital into a four-year college. “The trustees are now truly behind this university,” Evans said.

GOALS FOR 1998: Evans hopes to secure the $6.5 million from Wilson plus millions more in the final state budget for conversion of buildings. By July, he expects completion of an environmental analysis of the effects of the new campus once it reaches its maximum enrollment of 15,000. And by next January, Evans expects that students from the Cal State Northridge extension in Ventura will begin to attend classes at the new university.
