Calvary Chapel Tumbles in Final

Chrystal Johnson scored 15 points as Bellflower defeated Calvary Chapel, 51-33, Friday night to win Savanna girls’ basketball tournament for the second consecutive season. Johnson was named to the all-tournament team along with Odessa Jenkins, who had nine assists for the Buccaneers.

Lisa Whiteside, named the tournament MVP, scored eight points for Bellflower (12-1). The Buccaneers are ranked second in Southern Section Division II-AA behind Brea Olinda.

Cathy Joens scored 20 points for Calvary Chapel (11-3) and was named to the all-tournament team.

In the third-place game:

Lakewood St. Joseph 65, Cypress 50--St. Joseph used a 17-4 run in the final five minutes of the game to win. Jenny Decuir scored 27 points for the Jesters.

Lisa Moreno had 18 points and 10 rebounds for St. Joseph (11-4).

Lyndsay Weaver scored 18 points for Cypress (7-6).

In other tournament games:

Savanna 46, Iroquois Falls (Canada) 29--Quiana Starr scored 12 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, for Savanna (3-8) in the consolation game.

Valencia 59, Memorial (Canada) 38--Heather Hoppe scored 18 points, including nine on three-pointers, and Kelly McKibben and Monika Jackley had 17 points for Valencia (4-9) in the consolation game.

In the Santiago girls’ basketball tournament:

Canyon 52, Saddleback 26--Megan O’Neill scored 16 points and had eight steals and six assists to help Canyon (13-1) advance to tonight’s championship against El Modena at 8 p.m.

Sara Mohkami added 12 points and nine steals for Canyon. Saddleback will play Fullerton at 5 p.m. in a consolation match.

El Modena 52, Corona del Mar 32--Center Valerie Matweeff scored 15 points and Cristina Hernandez scored 14, including three three-pointers to lead El Modena in pool play.

Sarah Dunlap led Corona del Mar (3-8) with 15 points, including four three-pointers.

Santiago 49, Fullerton 31--Fullerton led at the half, 19-18, but was limited to only three points in the third quarter as Santiago (8-5) took a 31-22 lead. Stephanie Reupena led Santiago with 13 points, Sandra Jauregui had 11 and Sega Asiata scored 10.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

No. 10 Troy 67, Garden Grove 34--Heidi Hardeman had 22 points, including four three-pointers, for Troy (13-2). Veronica Johns had 11 points and Vanessa Yonamine scored 10. Leslie Nakagawa led Garden Grove (8-6) with nine points.

Irvine 58, University 41--Irvine led by only four at the half, but came out with a pressure defense in the second half and limited University (4-9) to only 14 second-half points.

Jody Carlson had 18 points and nine rebounds for Irvine (8-4). Lauren O’Hara had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Natalie Kamada had 11 points for the Vaqueros.

Rosary 66, Newport Harbor 43--Sarah Belavic led all scorers with 21 points and added five rebounds and five assists for Rosary (9-6). Romina Bollini had 14 points for Royals, who led at the half, 34-21. Kalena Jackson led Newport Harbor (4-9) with 16 points, including three three-pointers.

Sunny Hills 46, Norwalk Glenn 45--Shannon Lewis made three free throws down the stretch, including one with four seconds left, to lift Sunny Hills (5-6).

Villa Park 66, Katella 24--Missy Bynon scored 13 points and had 12 assists to lead Villa Park (7-4). Lindsey Wong led the Spartans in scoring with 14 points and Bianca Larson scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Foothill 1, Tustin 0--Justin Entsminger, on an assist by Adam Harrelson, scored a goal. Foothill is 8-3-3. Nick Adams recorded the shutout with one save.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Orange Lutheran 3, Troy 1--John Palnage, Chris Ziegler and Jordan Roos scored for Orange Lutheran (10-1-2).
