Finley Sinks Free Throws, Santa Barbara

Bryan Finley scored 27 points, including two free throws with one second left, to give Canyons a 70-69 victory over Santa Barbara in a Western State Conference men’s interdivisional basketball opener Saturday night at Santa Barbara City College.

Finley made 15 of 20 free throws in the game.

Woodley Polynice scored 11 points for Canyons (7-8).

Dan Johnson and Derek Dukes each scored 16 points for Santa Barbara.

Valley 74, Cuesta 65--Leon Brisport scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds for the Monarchs (13-5) in a WSC interdivisional game at Cuesta.

Tyree Williams added 16 points for Valley.

Tomas Urban scored 17 points and Ozzie Lockhart added 16 for Cuesta (12-7).

Glendale 64, Hancock 57--Will Ruffin collected 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Vaqueros (8-7) in a WSC interdivisional game.

Juan Corleto added 14 points for Valley.

Rickie McClanahan scored 15 for Hancock (5-13).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 61, Long Beach State 44--Reserve Jodi Sackville scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Waves (10-5) at the Pyramid.

Jenny Frank had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Angie White added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Waves.

Michelle Esparza scored 16 points for Long Beach and Kesha Wade had 14 points and seven of the 49ers’ 15 steals.

Cal State Northridge 62, Portland State 57--Tannea Nelson scored 12 points and Edniesha Curry had 11 points and six assists for the Matadors (4-6) play) in a Big Sky Conference opener at Northridge.

Shannon Spies had 19 points and Hiedi Hatcher had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Portland State (3-8).

Cuesta 83, Pierce 55--Donia Della scored 24 points for the Cougars in a WSC interdivisional victory at Pierce.

Francine Bennett scored 17 points and Kelly McKay added 12 for Cuesta (11-6).

Felicia Flores scored 13 points for the Brahmas (2-8).

Valley 67, Santa Barbara 48--Nyoki McKeith had 13 points, six assists and four steals for the Monarchs (10-7) in a WSC interdivisional opener at Valley.

Shana McGleehan scored 17 for the Vaqueros (4-8).

Canyons 89, Oxnard 35--Narineh Hartoonian had 16 assists for the Cougars (11-5) in a WSC interdivisional game at Canyons.

Maxine Unverferth had 18 points and 16 rebounds for Canyons.
