Second-ranked Capistrano Valley, which won the South Torrance Holiday Classic last week, opens South Coast League play on Friday at home against Mater Dei, the defending league and Southern Section Division I champion. Capistrano Valley (14-1-1) defeated Santa Ana Valley, 1-0, in the South Torrance final. Defender Bill Hierl was named tournament MVP and forward Justin Roach scored two game-winning goals for the Cougars.
Mater Dei began the season ranked third in the county polls, but the Monarchs, who graduated most of the players off last year’s title team, have lost four games and have fallen out of the top 10 for the first time in three years.
