Matador Women on Winning Side

Edniesha Curry scored 22 points and had nine rebounds Thursday night to help the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team move above .500 for the first time since 1989 with a 53-43 victory over Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

The Matadors (8-7, 5-1 in conference) outscored Weber State, 17-4, on points off turnovers.

Neda Milic added 10 points for Northridge.

In junior college women’s games:

Canyons 67, Santa Barbara 65--The Cougars staged a devastating second-half comeback and defeated the Vaqueros in a Western State Conference interdivision game at Santa Barbara City College.

Canyons (14-6) trailed, 35-22, at halftime, but tied the game midway through the second half and held on to win. The Cougars outscored Santa Barbara, 45-30, in the half.

Laura Tweedy had all nine of her points and Stephanie Wasserman had eight of her 11 points in the second half for Canyons. Vevette Mitchell, who scored eight second-half points, finished with 11 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Ventura 81, Bakersfield 43--Amirah Leonard scored 19 of her 31 points in the second half, and the two-time defending state champion Pirates (21-1) outscored the Renegades (10-7) by 30 points in the final 20 minutes of a Western State Conference interdivision game at Ventura.

Leonard also had 10 assists and four steals.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. California, 15-7, 15-4, 15-11--George Roumain had 15 kills and seven blocks for the Waves in a nonconference match.

The Waves (2-0) had 58 kills and 14 errors in 107 attempts for a .411 hitting percentage, and outblocked the Golden Bears, 24-0.
