Wilson Outlasts Irvine in Girls’ Water Polo

Irvine, ranked fifth in Southern Section Division I girls’ water polo, stayed with top-ranked Long Beach Wilson for the first half but was shut down in the second and lost, 9-5, Friday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Irvine’s Erin Lezak scored three of her four goals in the first quarter, but the Vaqueros (11-2) were shut out in the next two and fell behind, 6-3.

Brianne Barth and Cat Bell each scored three goals for Wilson.

In another nonleague girls’ water polo game:

University 3, No. 8 Edison 2 (OT)--Jennifer Hallman scored with 56 seconds remaining in the first overtime for University (9-5). Hayley Sudeith’s goal with 4:02 left in regulation tied the game for the Trojans.

In the El Dorado girls’ water polo tournament:

No. 5 Marina 16, La Serna 3--Jenny Lamb had five goals and six steals and Kendra Shanley added four goals and six steals for Marina (11-3) in the quarterfinal match.

The Vikings defeated Walnut, 18-1, in the first round.

In Academy League girls’ basketball:

Fairmont 45, Capistrano Valley Christian 42--Katy Barstow led visiting Fairmont (2-0) with 15 points, and Jennifer Glassman added 10.

In Freeway League girls’ basketball:

Fullerton 53, Sunny Hills 43--Cara Dykes scored 16 points and Shannon Horner added 14 for Fullerton (9-9, 2-1). Julie Bai led Sunny Hills (9-10, 0-3) with 22 points.

No. 10 Troy 94, La Habra 26--Heidi Hardeman led the Warriors (17-2, 3-0) with 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Tami Yonamine added 13 points, 10 steals and five assists, and Veronica Johns scored 14 points. Troy forced 35 turnovers.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 47, Garden Grove 36--Jaymee Pendergast scored 12 points and Tracey Downs added nine for Pacifica (9-7, 4-0). Katie Werdel scored 14 points for Garden Grove (10-8, 2-2).
