We’ve just returned from Christmas in Lincoln, England, thanks to Hunter Drohojowska-Philp’s article “A Victorian Holiday” (Dec. 15, 1996).

What a memorable place for Christmas, with its history and traditions from the Romans to medieval times, to the Victorians and, of course, all the amenities of modern England.

Unfortunately, the snow had disappeared by Christmas week, but everything else was as delightful as your article described. The highlight, of course, was the Christmas Eve carol service, attended by the bishop and the mayor of Lincoln in the cathedral that has celebrated Christmas for nearly a millennium.
