Transfer Season Begins to Heat Up in Football

If it’s January, then it’s time for football players to make plans to change schools under open enrollment. Some even transfer at the start of the spring semester.

Taft High, 25-2 over the past two seasons, has picked up linebacker Schauntte Parker, a starter as a junior at San Fernando. Parker began classes at Taft last week after moving into the district. Last season, the Toreadors got David Melo of Van Nuys.

Royal, ready to challenge Newbury Park and Westlake in the Marmonte League, could land two players from Simi Valley. Junior receiver-defensive back Eric Cooper and junior receiver Nick Campanelli, who caught 16 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns last season, are planning to transfer to Royal. Both will play on a team with Royal players in the NFL Air-It-Out flag football competition next month.

The William S. Hart district begins taking open enrollment applications Feb. 2. Coaches at Hart, Canyon, Saugus and Valencia will be waiting to see if any players switch schools. Last year, Hart gained sophomore linebacker Patrick Norton from Saugus under open enrollment.
