UCLA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Brandon Taliaferro of San Clemente, Eric Vallely of Newport Harbor, Jared Dannis of Woodbridge and Clay Chilcott of Huntington Beach. In addition, assistant coach Brian Rofer was a standout player at Fountain Valley High.

* Worth noting: Sophomore setter Taliaferro, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation freshman of the year last season, is averaging 14.6 set assists per game to lead the top-ranked Bruins to a 5-0 overall record. Junior Vallely is serving and back-row specialist. Dannis, who has an arm injury, has recently decided to be a redshirt.

UC SANTA BARBARA MEN’S BASKETBALL

* County connections: Mike Vukovich of Mater Dei.

* Worth noting: Vukovich, a 6-11 freshman forward, has come off the bench in 13 of the Gauchos’ 16 games this season. He is averaging 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds for Santa Barbara (5-11). As a senior at Mater Dei, he was a Times Orange County first-team selection and helped the Monarchs finish 32-3 and win their sixth consecutive Southern Section championship.

* Appearing locally: UCSB plays Big West Conference games Thursday at Cal State Fullerton and Saturday at UC Irvine.
