12 Players Chosen for Area Code Games

Twelve local players have been chosen to play on the Cincinnati Reds team for the Area Code Games on Aug. 10-15 at Blair Field in Long Beach.

The Area Code Games bring out hundreds of professional and college scouts to watch top high school baseball players from across the state and nation.

Tryouts were held Wednesday in Fresno. Among the pitchers selected were Phil Polanco of Notre Dame, Scott Rice of Royal, Jamie Shields of Hart, Adam Sperling of El Camino Real, Chris Cordeiro of Thousand Oaks, Ryan Ayers of Newbury Park, Ruben Ramirez of Rio Mesa and Kameron Loe of Granada Hills.

Position players chosen were infielder Wes Rasmussen of Moorpark, catcher Jason Allec of Highland, outfielder Jason Kubel of Highland and shortstop Kevin Howard of Westlake.

The tournament is run by professional scouts. More than 100 players tried out in Fresno from the 209, 805 and 818 area codes.

BASKETBALL

The San Fernando Valley Basketball Officials’ Assn. is putting on a boys’ basketball tournament Thursday through Saturday at Crespi High. The eight-team tournament includes Crespi, Saugus, Grant, Bell-Jeff, Valencia, Hoover and Reseda. The championship is Saturday at 8 p.m.
