Malin Breezes Into Semifinals

Fourth-seeded Gene Malin of Woodland Hills defeated unseeded Steve Lott of Canoga Park, 6-0, 6-2, Friday to advance to the semifinals of the USTA National Men’s 45 Hardcourt Championships at the Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.

Malin will face second-seeded Peter Bronson of Scottsdale, Ariz., at 12:30 p.m. Bronson advanced, 7-5, 6-4, over Len Wofford of Portland.

In the other semifinal, set for 11:30 a.m., 13th-seeded Ross Boling of Whitelake, Mich., will meet 12th-seeded Pete Kelly of Palm Springs. Bowling upset top-seeded Wesley Jackson of Ace, N.M., 6-3, 6-2, while Kelly upset seventh-seeded Tom Leonard of South Pasadena, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, third-seeded Malin and Leonard will face second-seeded Dave Austin of Camarillo and Boling at 4:30 p.m., while top-seeded Dan Bohannon of Orange and David Bohannon of Garden Grove play unseeded Mike Nelson of Orange and Tom Smith of Anaheim.

BASEBALL

Marke Horvat of Hart High and Fernando Valenzuela Jr. of St. Francis competed on the U.S. team that won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games championships for 16-year-olds and under in Mexico this week.

Horvat batted .448 (13 for 29) and Valenzuela had eight doubles among his 11 hits.

Juniors Matt Harrington of Palmdale and Brian Horwitz of Crespi have been selected to the USA Junior Olympics 16-and-under team that will play in Fairview, Ill., beginning today.

Cal State Northridge will hold camps next week and July 20-24 for players 7 to 14. Cost is $125.

Pitcher Jeremy Smith of Glendale College has accepted a scholarship to Cameron University (Okla.), an NCAA Division II school.

BOXING

Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, with 13 knockout victories in as many professional fights, figures to face his toughest opponent to date when he meets Jose Antonio Rivera (26-1-1, 19 knockouts) of Puerto Rico on Aug. 22 at Bally’s Park Place in Atlantic City.

The bout will be on the undercard of a 10-round bout between IBF junior-lightweight champion Arturo Gatti and Ivan Robinson.

The program will be televised live by HBO.

SOCCER

Tania Schraml has been chosen interim women’s coach at Moorpark College, the Raiders’ third coach in less than a year.

Schraml, an assistant last season, was promoted following the resignation last month of Jen Cowper. Schraml played at Royal High, Moorpark College and Sonoma State.

Moorpark Athletic Director John Keever said he expects to make a full-time hire to replace Cowper in the spring.

WATER POLO

Jon Fleming has been selected head coach of the boys’ and girls’ programs at Westlake High.

Fleming, who played three seasons at Thousand Oaks High and attended Cal Lutheran, will also teach English.
