Farrel Is Headed for New Mexico
Jake Farrel of Newbury Park High has been offered a football scholarship by New Mexico and said Friday he will sign after taking a trip to the Albuquerque school Monday and Tuesday.
Farrel, a 6-foot-5 receiver, had 119 receptions for 2,039 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons at Newbury Park.
New Mexico offensive coordinator Jim Fenwick recruited Farrel after he caught a touchdown pass in last week’s Valley all-star game.
Farrel also will play baseball at New Mexico. He played right field and batted .374 last season.
Daniel Bobick of Newbury Park High, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year, will play in an all-star game between teams from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties tonight at Santa Barbara High.
Others expected to play for Ventura County are Kevin Lawrence and Keith Donahue of Moorpark, Bas Van Rhee of Thousand Oaks, Jeff Stuteville of Camarillo, and Greg Jones of Oak Park.
The team will be coached by Rob Hall of Oak Park.
A girls’ game is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Coaches’ Assn.
The Ventura girls’ team includes Erin Barker and Nell Becker of Nordhoff, Renae Hofmann of Buena and Sosanna Hallahan of Santa Clara.
Cal State Northridge signed shortstop Jason Gorman of Palmdale High, a three-year starter who was most valuable player of the Golden League last season.
Markie Horvat of Hart, Fernando Valenzuela Jr. of St. Francis and Matt Harrington of Palmdale have been selected to play in the USA Pan American Games for 16-year-olds in Mexico next month.
A memorial service for former youth coach Bruce Gomez will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Diadacus Church in Sylmar.
Gomez, 47, died Sunday of cancer. His daughter, Krista, played at Alemany High and Arizona.
Gomez coached youth softball locally for more than 10 years.
Valencia High has hired Ray Sanchez as girls’ coach.
Sanchez, a former assistant coach at Canyon, replaces Zack Ambrose, who took a job coaching at Pasadena City College.
