Van Nuys Wins on a No-Hitter by Ayala

Left-hander Junior Ayala struck out seven and pitched a five-inning no-hitter to lead Van Nuys High to an 11-2 victory over Westchester in the first round of the L.A. Watts Summer Games on Saturday at Westchester.

Shane Mochizuki drove in four runs, including three with a fifth-inning double.

Mochizuki had a bases-loaded walk in the fourth.

Abel Pulido of Van Nuys went five for five, including a run-scoring triple in the third.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Tiffany Burgess of Birmingham High was selected outstanding athlete and Birmingham won the team title at Cerritos College.

Burgess won the 800 meters in 2:38.50 and the 1,600 meters in 5:37.32. She finished second in the 400 meters in 58.28.

Jackie Tillmon of Birmingham won the 3,200 meters in 13:25.88.

BOYS’ TRACK

Mateo Gonzalez of Birmingham High won the 800 in 2:10.50, the 1,600 in 4:46.77 and the 3,200 in 10:54.8 at Cerritos College.

Orlando Nettles of Birmingham won the 200 meters in 22.59.

Birmingham scored 41 points to place second to Paramount’s 52.
