Anaheim City Council

* AMBULANCE SERVICES: Once again, the City Council will consider whether to negotiate with Care Ambulance Service Inc. to develop a contract for emergency transportation. The council twice has postponed the decision.

Councilman Bob Zemel has criticized the selection process, calling it biased, flawed and “highly political.” At the June 9 meeting, Zemel failed to get support from the council to hire a private consultant to review the process. Representatives from ambulance companies not selected also contested the process and requested an independent review.

The city has never had a formal contract with an ambulance provider. To award a contract, the city solicited proposals from private ambulance companies. An independent panel reviewed five proposals and ranked Care Ambulance as the top choice. Fire Chief Jeff Bowman said the process was competitive, fair and unbiased.
