Trabuco Hills’ Griffith Signs With UCLA

Trabuco Hills’ Darnesha Griffith has signed to compete in track and field at UCLA.

Griffith, The Times Orange County girls’ track and field athlete of the year, posted the county’s top marks in the long jump, high jump and triple jump and advanced to the state preliminaries in each.

She won Southern Section Division II titles in high jump and long jump, and her marks of 19 feet 4 1/4 inches in the long jump and 5-9 in the high jump at the Masters Meet were among the state’s best.

Santa Margarita’s Randall Shelley said he has signed to play baseball at UCLA.

Shelley was a Times Orange County first-team selection and the Sea View League’s most valuable player this season.

An infielder, he batted .530 with eight home runs and 28 runs batted.

The Big West Conference will not change the format for its postseason basketball tournament, conference officials said Friday. The top four teams from the Eastern and Western divisions will qualify.

The championship committee looked into changing the format after New Mexico State failed to qualify last season. The Aggies finished fifth in the Eastern Division, but were 18-12 overall. Three of the four Western Division teams--Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and Long Beach--had losing records.
