Ventura Girls Win Twice, Reach Final

Ventura High advanced to the championship game of the girls’ basketball tournament in the L.A. Watts Summer Games with two victories at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

The Cougars defeated Washington, 41-32, in the semifinals after beating North Hollywood, 46-30, in the quarterfinals.

Ventura will play Palisades, a 52-30 semifinal winner over Lynwood, in the title game today at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Palisades 57, Channel Islands 32--Jaline Bradley scored 18 points for Channel Islands in a quarterfinal game.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Lancaster 2, Bell 1--Forwards Michelle Hamilton and Theresa Waid scored for the Eagles in a first-round victory over Bell at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Waid scored the decisive goal in the 35th minute. Hamilton scored in the fifth minute before Bell tied it, 1-1, at halftime.

Lancaster advanced to the second round, where the Eagles picked up a forfeit victory over Arcadia, which did not show.

The Eagles were eliminated with a 3-0 loss to Santa Monica in the round of 16.

Canyon 2, Peninsula JV 0--Nicole Modugno and Jasmine Cetrone scored in a second-round match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Canyon 5, Ramona 0--Gentry Green and Alex Gutierrez each had two goals for the Cowboys.

Canyon led, 1-0, at halftime on a goal by Green.

Gutierrez recorded her goals in the 38th and 45th minutes of the 50-minute game. The Cowboys will play South Torrance in the quarterfinals today.
