Mendoza Pitches No-Hitter

Reanna Mendoza pitched her second no-hitter in two days and Heather Tom had four hits and drove in three runs as Cypress College won two games to take the championship of the Merced softball tournament.

Tom had two hits, drove in a run and scored another as Cypress beat Modesto, 3-0, in the championship game.

Mandy Rockwell (5-2) gave up three hits in getting the victory.

Mendoza (5-0) no-hit Ventura and struck out four and Tom had two hits and drove in two as Cypress won, 14-0, in a semifinal-round game called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Mendoza, a sophomore transfer from Cerritos College, had no-hit Ventura in pool play Saturday for Cypress (10-2).

Also against Ventura, Kelli Falls added two hits and scored two runs also for the Chargers, the defending state champions.

Besides beating Ventura, Cypress also beat Modesto, 7-0, and lost to Merced, 2-1, Saturday.

In the Southwestern women’s tennis tournament:

Orange Coast team wins titles--Martha Garcia and Denise Poirel finished first in flight two. The pair won the final, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
