Watley Lifts Woodbridge in Softball

Natasha Watley had three hits and scored three runs as Woodbridge defeated El Toro, 5-3, in the championship game of the Fullerton softball tournament Tuesday at Lions Field. Brittany Ziegler added two hits and two runs batted in.

Christy Robitaille pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Warriors (5-0), ranked third.

Watley also had three hits and two runs scored in a semifinal victory over Villa Park, 6-0.

El Toro (4-1), ranked sixth, defeated Arcadia, 3-0, in the other semifinal.

In a consolation game:

La Habra 13, Santiago 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Junior Elaine Elsesser pitched a no-hitter for visiting La Habra (3-0-1). Elsesser (2-0) struck out five and walked two. La Habra scored five runs in the first inning. Christina Giddons was three for three with four RBIs.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Cerritos Gahr 1, Kennedy 0--Tiffany Brown had an RBI single in the fourth inning. The Gladiators (3-0) play Ocean View in the semifinals Thursday.

In the Costa Mesa baseball tournament:

Laguna Beach 4, Bolsa Grande 0--Andrew Barry struck out 11, giving up only two singles and two walks for Laguna Beach (2-0). Teammate Aaron Skinner had a double and a home run in the pool-play game.

In the Loara tournament:

Fountain Valley 7, Servite 5--Nick Stavale’s home run sparked a seven-run fifth inning for host Fountain Valley (3-0) in a quarterfinal game. C.J. Wilson had a two-run homer in the inning for the Barons.

Loara 4, Santa Margarita 3--Jacob Kungl drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Loara, trailing, 3-2, scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Starter Eddie Goosten gave up three hits, struck out two and walked one in five innings for Loara (1-0). Santa Margarita is 2-1.

In the quarterfinals of the Newport Elks tournament:

Foothill 13, Sonora 3--Chad Concolino hit two home runs for Foothill. Josh Arhardt also had a home run for the Knights (2-0), who play Mater Dei in Thursday’s semifinals.

Tustin 5, Newport Harbor 3--Winning pitcher Jim Sanjurjo had 11 strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Dan Trujillo had three hits and scored two runs and teammate Quinn Brumbaugh had two RBIs for the Tillers.

In nonleague golf:

Santa Margarita 201, Sunny Hills 210--Jimmy Dunn shot a one-over 37 on the Coto de Caza North course for host Santa Margarita in the first nine holes of an 18-hole match. Dusty Schmidt shot two-over 38 for Sunny Hills.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Villa Park 102, San Clemente 72--Kyle Baumgarner had a fast early-season sprint, winning the event in 21.84 seconds for visiting Villa Park (2-0). Baumgarner also won the 100 free in 48.47.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Villa Park 104, San Clemente 65--Despite winning most of the events, San Clemente could not handle Villa Park’s depth. Ari Gardner was a double winner for San Clemente, taking the 100 butterfly (1:01.43) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.29). Villa Park is 2-0.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Canyon 9, Garden Grove 9 (Canyon wins, 4-2, in second round of tiebreaker)--Doubles players Travis Kula and Kevin Saman won, 7-4, in the second round of the tiebreaker to lift Canyon. In the first round of the tiebreaker, singles player John Nguyen overcame a three-point deficit to win, 10-8.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Corona del Mar 3, Tustin 1--Kevin Hansen had 39 assists to lead Corona del Mar to a 15-5, 12-15, 15-6, 15-10 victory. Dennis Alshuler had nine kills for host Corona del Mar (2-0). Tustin is 0-1.
