Chop Pitches No-Hitter to Lead Tustin

Chad Chop pitched a no-hitter, but needed some seventh-inning heroics to preserve the gem, an 8-0 Tustin victory over Esperanza Thursday in the semifinals of the Newport Elks baseball tournament.

Chop struck out six and walked three for the Tillers (3-0), but David Munoz almost broke up the no-hitter for Esperanza (2-1) leading off the seventh inning. Munoz drove an 0-2 pitch to the wall but was robbed by center fielder Richard Lane.

Tustin catcher Todd Scott hit a solo homer in the first and added a double in the fifth. He had four RBIs.

Tustin will play Foothill in the finals.

In the other semifinal:

Foothill 7, Mater Dei 5--John Stephens scored from second on Rob Koster’s double in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Foothill (3-0) a 6-5 lead.

Mater Dei (2-1) scored five runs in the first inning before Foothill rallied.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Mission Viejo 12, Laguna Beach 3--John Hudgins got the victory for Mission Viejo (2-1) and was two for two with a home run and four RBIs in a pool-play game. Laguna Beach is 2-1.

In the Loara tournament:

Fountain Valley 7, Edison 2--C.J. Wilson’s two-run double was part of a five-run third inning for Fountain Valley in a semifinal victory. Pitcher Brian Ackerson held Edison (2-2) to one hit over five innings for his second victory this season.

The Barons (4-0) will play the Loara-Canyon winner.

Pacifica falls to 2-2.

El Dorado 5, Dana Hills 4--Jason Joho, the potential tying run, was thrown out at home plate by El Dorado center fielder Tyler Sporrer to end the game.

Sporrer had also scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning on C.J. Rice’s fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Mark Wade had scored the tying run for the Golden Hawks (3-1), when Ryan Ralph was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In nonleague golf:

Edison 211, Canyon 246--Kyle Wicks had three birdies and finished at Sea Cliff with a one-under-par 35 for Edison (5-1).

Huntington Beach 199, Sunny Hills 199--Jeff Park led Sunny Hills (1-1-1) with a one-over 37 at Los Coyotes.

Santa Margarita 197, Temecula Linfield 209--Jimmy Dunn had four birdies and two bogies, finishing two under par, in a victory for Santa Margarita (1-0) on Coto De Caza’s North course.

In nonleague girls’ softball:

Laguna Beach 8, Connelly 2--Freshman Autumn Pierce had a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored for the host Artists (1-1). Laguna Beach finished 1-21 last season.

Orange Lutheran 6, Sierra Madre Maranatha 0--Lutheran’s Jessica Edwards pitched a no-hitter and had a perfect game until she walked Maranatha’s last batter. Edwards struck out 16 and was two for four.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Irvine 238, Laguna Hills 175--Hammy Kim won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.86) and also posted a Southern Section qualifying time in the 200 individual medley (2:13.10) for host Irvine (2-0) Shauna Barnard won the 200 freestyle (1:55.31) and 200 individual medley (2:11.27).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Brea Olinda 10, Walnut 8--Brea’s Matt Traino and Chris Manton swept in doubles, 7-5, 6-0, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, 10-8. Visiting Brea (2-3) handed Walnut its first loss.

Corona del Mar 11, Beverly Hills 7--Undefeated Parker Collins beat one of the top junior players in the country, Beverly Hills’ Jose Lieberman, 6-4, in the first round of singles for Corona del Mar (2-0).

It was the first loss this season for Lieberman. Beverly Hills (2-1) was top-ranked in Division II going into the match.

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

Mission Viejo 76, El Toro 51--Mission Viejo’s Mark Gleason won the 800 and 1,600 events with times of 2 minutes .4 seconds and 4:31, respectively.

El Toro’s Dave Bienek took the 300 hurdles in 41.81 seconds and the pole vault, clearing 14 feet.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Mission Viejo 105, El Toro 30--Ashley Bethel won three events for Mission Viejo (1-0), going 14.90 in the 100 hurdles, 25.90 in the 200 and 18-0 in the long jump. El Toro is 0-1.

Santa Margarita 73, Fountain Valley 60--Brooke Fitzgerald tied the school record in the shotput (34-2 1/4) for Santa Margarita (1-0).
