Saddleback Upsets Santa Ana in Baseball

Saddleback catcher Greg Pines hit a grand slam to lead the Gauchos to an 8-6 upset over first-place Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Saturday at Santa Ana.

Pines’ homer came in the third inning with Saddleback trailing, 4-0. The Gauchos (13-6, 4-5) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. Kekoa Colon came on in the fifth inning to record the victory for Saddleback (13-6, 4-5). Santa Ana falls to 19-4, 6-3.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Fullerton 8, Orange Coast 5--Fullerton’s Beau Bryant and Dan Smith each had two hits and two runs batted in for the visiting Hornets (11-8-1, 3-4).

Jim Hostetler (3-1) picked up his third victory of the year and David McLean pitched the ninth to record his fifth save of the season. Orange Coast falls to 9-11, 2-7.

Golden West 5, Cypress 4--Two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Golden West a 5-3 lead and the Rustlers (11-8, 4-5) held on.

Golden West’s Jeff Jones reached base on an error by shortstop Michael Duursma to lead off the sixth, then scored on Eric Albright’s double. Albright moved to third on a groundout and scored on Brian Jones’ sacrifice fly.

In the Apple Photography softball tournament:

Cypress 12, Victor Valley 1--A bases-loaded triple by Cypress’ Ro Lutz keyed an eight-run second inning as the Chargers defeated Victor Valley in the championship game. Mandy Rockwell earned her 12th victory of the season as Cypress improved to 21-2.
