GIRLS’ BASKETBALL SOUTHERN REGIONAL FINAL

San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 50, Palos Verdes Chadwick 47--Junior guard Ashley Raasch’s basket with 2:10 remaining gave the top-seeded Royals their first lead of the Division V regional final at Pauley Pavilion and Mission Prep (28-3) stayed on top for the win.

Raasch finished with 17 points for the Royals, which outscored Chadwick, 17-2, in the fourth quarter. Paige Billingsley scored 16 and senior center Ann Mott contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds for Mission Prep.

Sophomore forward Erin Gilliland scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half for the Dolphins (28-2), and grabbed seven rebounds while teammate Diane Webber scored 11.

Royal coach Jay Cowitz praised Mott for shutting down Gilliland in the second half by playing in the passing lanes and fronting her under the basket.

“We felt that the key coming in was stopping Webber and Gilliland, and we did it at the right time,” Cowitz said. “We made them disappear at the end of the game.”
