El Toro Wins Pair in Softball Tournament

El Toro advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bullhead City (Ariz.) softball tournament with two victories on Friday.

In the first game, Suzanne Guy (3-1) pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, as the fifth-ranked Chargers defeated Yuma (Ariz.) Cibola, 2-1. El Toro (6-2) scored its runs on four singles in the second inning, with Vanessa Andrade and Brytanni Lindheim picking up RBIs.

In the second round, the Chargers defeated Taylorsville (Utah), 7-0, in a game stopped after four innings because of the mercy rule.

El Toro (7-2) had eight hits in the game, scoring four runs in the first and three in the second against Taylorsville. Susan Churchwell (4-1) pitched a two-hitter and had two hits and two RBIs. Kristi Kwiatkowski also had two hits and two RBIs.

El Toro will play Clovis in the quarterfinals at 7 tonight.

In other tournament games:

Canyon 4, Taylorsville 1 (8)--Meghan Goldstein had the game-winning RBI in the eighth for Canyon in a consolation game.

Canyon was knocked into the consolation bracket after losing to Clovis, 1-0, in an earlier game. Clovis scored the game’s only run on a wild pitch during an intentional walk with two outs in the fifth inning. Amber Kolle was two for two for Canyon and Meghan Goldstein gave up two hits in four innings.

In nonleague golf:

Servite 190, Villa Park 212--Dave Lauder and Justin Ragonetti each shot 37 for Servite (4-0) at Los Coyotes. Mark Hewlett shot 37 for Villa Park.

In the Canyon Relays boys’ swim meet:

Santa Margarita wins three relays--The Eagles, which won the 400 medley, 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke relays, tied Villa Park for first in the team competition. The Spartans won the 400 and 500 freestyle relays and were second in four of the five remaining events.

In the Canyon Relays girls’ swim meet:

Santa Margarita edges Villa Park--Santa Margarita won just one event, the 200 medley relay, but finished among the top three in all seven events. Fourth-place Orange won three relays and third-place Canyon won two.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 13, Brea Olinda 5--Tom Lloyd won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, to improve to 24-0 in singles. Jeff Cohen and Alex Lin swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Visiting Esperanza (7-1) won eight of nine doubles sets. Brea is 2-6.

Sunny Hills 12, Canyon 6--Tuji Chang and John Choi won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 in doubles for Sunny Hills (3-2). Canyon dropped to 4-2.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

El Dorado 3, Valencia 1--Matt Peacock had 18 kills for El Dorado (5-1, 2-0), which won 14-16, 15-10, 15-12, 15-8. Brian Bartczak had 10 kills for Valencia.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Pacifica 0--Chris Smith had 11 kills and Anh Nguyen nine for La Quinta (1-5, 1-1), which won 15-0, 15-10, 15-11. Setter Thien Vo had seven aces for the Aztecs.

Los Amigos 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Keri Niumata had 12 kills to lead host Los Amigos (5-1, 2-0) to a 15-3, 15-13, 15-11 victory.

In nonleague play:

Saddleback 3, Santa Ana Valley 2--Alvin Magcasi had 24 kills to lead Saddleback in a 10-15, 13-15, 15-9, 17-15, 15-5 victory. Phouc Tran had 24 assists for visiting Saddleback (2-3).
