Rountree Hurt Before Game

Greg Rountree, Camarillo High’s rushing leader with 580 yards, was injured in an automobile accident Friday and did not play in the Scorpions’ 27-14 Pacific View League victory at Channel Islands.

Coach Carl Thompson of Camarillo said Rountree was involved in an accident a few hours before kickoff but was not seriously injured.

Rountree was taken to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital. A spokesperson said Rountree was treated for undisclosed injuries and released.

Erase his name: Coach Jim Bonds of Alemany is proud of the passing records he established as a quarterback at Hart High, but they are being broken by senior quarterback Kyle Boller.

The latest Bonds record to be eclipsed was his 39 touchdown passes set in 1986 and tied by Ryan Connors in 1990. Boller has 41 after nine games.

“I’m just glad a quality kid broke it and he’s going to be playing on Sundays one day,” Bonds said.

Throwback: Teammates have begun calling junior linebacker Robert Watts of Paraclete the Raptor, after the prehistoric predator from the movie “Jurassic Park.”

“He’s absolutely killing guys,” Coach Steve Hagerty said of the Spirits’ 6-foot-3, 205-pound sack leader. “He’s a silent assassin. He’s sneaky and just nails guys

from the side. Somehow, you’d better account for him.”

Snapshot: Scott Meierhoff, Fillmore’s center and long-snapper, was the recipient of a real wallop on Oct. 23 during a punt against Carpinteria, forcing Coach Matt Suttle to alter his kicking game.

“I didn’t see it, I heard it,” Suttle said. “Plastic on plastic, and the crowd went ‘Oooh!’ ”

Meierhoff was examined and deemed healthy but was held out of the remainder of the game. Without a long-snapper, Suttle elected to run a fake punt from Fillmore’s own 25-yard line.

The play was unsuccessful and Meierhoff wasn’t getting much sympathy either.

“The coaching staff all rushed home after the game,” Suttle said. “We figured the hit would be on [television] for sure, but it wasn’t.”

Mad rush: Wes Cobos of Thousand Oaks improved his region-high rushing total to 1,613 yards with a 168-yard effort against Moorpark. He scored four touchdowns to increase his season total to 18.
