Valley Turns Back Chaffey With Watertight Defense

Ryan Rittmiller and Loran Leidinger each scored three goals and goalie Andrew Langer made 13 saves, and Valley College defeated Chaffey, 12-7, in a first-round game of the Western State Conference men’s water polo tournament Friday at Citrus College.

Langer had four his saves while the Monarchs (12-11-1, 4-4) held Chaffey scoreless in the fourth quarter.

With Valley holding a 3-2 edge after the first quarter, Leidinger drew three ejection fouls, giving the Monarchs several man-up situations.

The Monarchs took advantage, outscoring Chaffey, 3-1, in the second quarter to take a 6-3 halftime lead.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 15, Citrus 1--Shareen Pena scored three of her five goals in the first half, and the top-seeded Monarchs raced to an 8-0 lead in a WSC tournament semifinal match at Citrus.

Stephanie Hammer had five goals and Lianna Kishimoto had three for Valley (13-10-1), which meets second-seeded Ventura today for the championship.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Dos Pueblos 11, Buena 9--Keith Wilson scored his four goals in a seven-goal fourth quarter but the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-5), fell short in a playoff to determine third place in the Channel League.

Ryan Nideffer scored two of his three goals in the last quarter to help Buena rally from an 8-2 deficit after three quarters.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Pacific View League tournament--Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa High and Lauren Gaona of Camarillo advanced to the singles final Monday with semifinal victories at Cabrillo Racquet Club in Camarillo.

Brymer, seeded sixth in Southern California in the girls’ 18s by the U.S. Tennis Assn., routed Michelle Alvarez of Camarillo, 6-0, 6-0.

Gaona defeated Erin Jones of Camarillo, 6-1, 6-3.

Brymer advanced by beating Olivia Thomas of Oxnard, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Gaona trounced Amber Yokoi of Oxnard, 6-0, 6-0.

Gaona and Brymer had byes in the first round.

Frontier League tournament--Shervin Saedinia defeated Calabasas teammate Vanessa Everly, 6-1, 6-1, to claim the singles championship at Calabasas.

Andrea Leewong and Brittany Bierman outlasted Frayla Schoenfeld and Kathy Habuki, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, in an all-Calabasas doubles final.

Delphic League tournament--Junior Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall defeated defending champion Olivia Garcia-McKean of Brentwood, 7-5, 6-2, to win the singles title at Valley College.

Nguyen (47-0), is a transfer from Beverly Hills who won the Ocean League singles title last season.

She took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Garcia-McKean battled back to tie the score, 3-3, before Nguyen prevailed.

In the second set, Nguyen trailed, 2-1, but won the last five games.

Seniors Emily Abrams and Stephanie Carapetian (48-2) of Campbell Hall won the doubles title, beating Danielle Singer and Susan Kimble of Brentwood, 6-2, 6-4.

Simi Valley 18, Royal 0--Rebecca Hunau and Stella Chu (57-0) won three sets at No. 2 doubles and the Pioneers (16-4, 10-2) won at Rancho Simi Community Park and finished second to Westlake in the Marmonte League.

Royal (6-10, 5-7), which finished fourth the league, played without top singles players Annie Tran, who had a back injury, and Alicia Rock, who was sick.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Ventura def. Thousand Oaks, 15-8, 15-10, 15-11--Casey Hansen had five of her 10 kills in the first game and Alex Gientke had eight of her 13 digs in the third game for the Cougars (8-10) in a nonleague victory at Ventura.

Gientke had six kills and Hansen added three aces.
