Edison Beats Oilers for Field Hockey Title

Edison finished the season unbeaten and defeated Huntington Beach, 3-1, in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions in field hockey Saturday at Edison High.

Nicole Harrison and Nicolette Harnish scored first-half goals to help the Chargers (15-0-1) take the early lead. Jenny Casares added a second-half goal for Edison.

Laurie Bostmus scored a second-half goal for Huntington Beach (10-3-3)

Santiago defeated Fountain Valley, 1-0, in the third-place game. Fountain Valley played Edison to a scoreless tie in the semifinals, but Edison advanced to the final on strokes, 3-2.

In the Sea View League boys’ cross-country finals:

Herberts wins--Curt Herberts finished first in 14:55 to lead Newport Harbor (34 points) to the league championship Friday. Teammate Chris McMillen finished the three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park in 15:13 for second place.

In the Sea View League girls’ cross-country finals:

Mann wins--Santa Margarita’s Lori Mann won the individual championship, completing the three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park in 17:23 Friday. Newport Harbor’s Alicia McFall placed second in 17:32.

Liz Morse finished fourth in 17:38 for Corona del Mar, which finished third (80 points), but still won the league title.

Irvine won the league meet with 51 points, followed by Woodbridge (73 points).

In the North Orange County boys’ water polo tournament final:

No. 3 Servite 11, No. 6 Marina 6--Michael Kim scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter for Servite (23-3). He had 19 goals in five tournament games.

The score was tied, 5-5, going into the fourth, but Mike Rustemeyer scored a goal to give Servite the lead. Dane Jensen scored two of his three goals for Servite in that quarter.

Rusty Keil scored two goals for Marina (22-3).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 14, Magnolia 13--Mark Becher scored one of his four goals with 1:37 left in the fourth quarter for Brea (9-13, 6-2), ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division VI. Derek Slabaugh also scored four goals for Brea.

Kevin Marsh scored five goals and Dante Zena added four for sixth-ranked Magnolia.
