Gomez Leads OCC to Title in Cross-Country

Orange Coast’s Zoila Gomez won the women’s race and led the Pirates to the team title at the Southern California cross-country championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Gomez finished the three-mile course in 18 minutes 33 seconds for OCC, which finished with 44 points. Second-place El Camino had 110 points.

Orange Coast had three runners among the top 10. Bernice Carbajal finished seventh in 19:20, Penni Proffitt was ninth in 19:35.

Santa Ana finished third with 202 points, led by Sharin Moreno in eighth place (19:27).

Orange Coast and Santa Ana qualified for the state championships.

Others who qualified as individuals included Golden West’s Beckie Sweatman, Fullerton’s Yelena Zavala and Felicia Rodriguez and Saddleback’s Kindra Glavin.

In the men’s race:

Santa Ana and Saddleback qualify--Alex Reyes finished sixth in 21:22 over four miles at Mt. SAC for Santa Ana, which finished sixth with 187 points to qualify for the state championships.

Dan Gaston finished third in 21:01 to lead Saddleback, which finished 12th (318).

Todd Disney won in 20:55 for Moorpark, which won the team title with 99 points.

Other county individual qualifiers included Orange Coast’s Robby Ellis, Ray Vergara, Jamie Carrillo, Juan Sanchez and Rene Acuna, Fullerton’s Flavio Gutierrez and Irvine Valley’s Seth Morgan.
