Gilchrist, Bogue Share Lead Going Into Final Round

Derek Gilchrist of Elk Grove, Calif., and Tim Bogue of Windsor, Calif., share the lead going into today’s final round of the TearDrop Tour West Coast Championship at Cypress Golf Club.

Gilchrist, the first-day leader after shooting 66 Tuesday, shot two-over-par 73 Wednesday for a three-under 139. Bogue shot 71.

Five players are within two shots of the lead.

Twenty-four of the 69 players in the field made the cut, including Perry Parker of Dana Point (144) and Darren Ernst of Huntington Beach (146).

Cypress College pitcher Jake Moon said he has made an oral commitment to play at Cal State Fullerton in the 2000 season and will sign with the Titans this week. At Fullerton, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Moon, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, had a 2-0 record last season as a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth before transferring to Cypress. He pitched in high school in Alexandria, Va.

Roller Hockey International President and CEO Bernie Mullin said he will hold a press conference Tuesday to announce that the professional in-line league, which folded at the end of 1997, will return in late spring with as many as 10 teams, perhaps including one in Orange County. Mullin said he has extended an invitation to the Bullfrogs, who jumped to Major League Roller Hockey last year.

Basketball coaches Steve Lavin of UCLA, Lorenzo Romar of Pepperdine and Steve Brooks of Los Alamitos High will speak at the monthly sports newsmakers lunch Tuesday at the Arrowhead Pond.

Lavin and Romar will be part of the fifth Wooden Classic Dec. 5 at the Pond, when UCLA plays Oklahoma State and Pepperdine plays Kansas. Brooks’ Los Alamitos team will take part in the Wooden High School Invitational Dec. 4, which will have a girls’ high school game followed by three boys’ games.

The first Holiday Cup women’s international water polo tournament will be Dec. 10-13 at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Los Alamitos.

The tournament will include Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the United States, and will be the first international women’s tournament in the United States since the FINA World Cup in 1991.

The 18-member U.S. team includes Bernice Orwig of Anaheim, Robin Beauregard of Huntington Beach, and Julie Swail of Placentia.
