FOOTBALL PLAYOFF CAPSULES : Division XI

Share

Defending champion: Lancaster Paraclete, which beat Banning, 8-6.

Seeded teams: 1. Orange Lutheran (8-1), 2. Ventura St. Bonaventure (7-3), 3. Cerritos Valley Christian (7-3), 4. Playa del Rey St. Bernard (6-3).

Dark horse: Carpinteria (7-3). The Warriors, who have won several Southern Section titles, probably would have been seeded second had they not lost to St. Bonaventure, 39-10, in a Tri-Valley League showdown two weeks ago. Carpinteria played without 10 starters who were suspended for that game for disciplinary reasons.

Notes: Orange Lutheran has won eight in a row and Coach Jim Kunau says this team reminds him a lot of the group he had two years ago, when the Lancers advanced to the section semifinals. On paper, Santa Paula doesn’t look that tough, but Kunau said he isn’t taking anyone lightly. A victory would probably send the Lancers up against Carpinteria in the second round. “If I was an oddsmaker,” Kunau said of the possible second-round matchup, “I wouldn’t know who to pick.” . . . Cerritos Valley Christian Coach Mike Wunderley was flabbergasted to find the Crusaders were seeded; they ended the regular season with a 21-13 loss at Encinitas Santa Fe Christian. “It’ll take me a week to figure out this bracket,” Wunderley said. . . . Calvary Chapel got the at-large berth and drew two-time Tri-Valley champion St. Bonaventure, which has won five in a row. St. Bonaventure won the division title in 1996, defeating Ojai Nordhoff, 18-14. Although not seeded, Nordhoff won the Frontier League title, was placed in Orange Lutheran’s half of the bracket and hosts San Jacinto Friday.
